    Waves, waves and more waves! If you are a monkey and love being in the water and riding on waves, then this week is for YOU! We will be testing our water riding skills out on as many different types of boats & boards that we can. Boogie boarding, surfing, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.  This is the ultimate water adventure, testing your core, balance and fitness. This class has been specifically designed for ages 9 – 12 years old so no experience is necessary as long as you are comfortable on and in the water. We will teach you the basics! Come have fun in the sun while learning valuable ocean safety skills.

  • Fisher's Island After School Marine Science & Fishing (grades K-6)

    3:00 pm - 4:30 pm          June 2, 3, 4, 5 Make-up Day June 8

    Cost: $75

    Enrollment: minimum 12 students

    Discover the lives of fish, algae, and some amazing marine invertebrates!  Gather information about local ecosystems and how all organisms are linked together in a tangled web of life. Put your marine science knowledge to the test as you try to catch a fish while learning the basics of rod and reel fishing or expanding your fishing repertoire.  Catch and release only!

  • Tuesday, February 16th (Grades 5-8) 

    K'Nex Challenges (AM Session, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm)   Cost: $40   Minimum 6 students

    Marine Science Paint & Pastels (PM Session, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)    Cost: $40   Minimum 6 students

    K'Nex Challenges Take your engineering skills up a notch and build working models using K’Nex, design and engineer three different types of models and compare you designs to your classmates.  However you must be careful to stay under budget for each project, or your clients might not want to buy your building.

    Marine Science Paint & Pastels Art is essential to the science community.  Drawings and painting allow for documenting dissections of animals as well as depicting the ecology of ocean habitats.  Learn how to paint using pastels and create a piece of marine science art you can take home, or work on a bigger piece to display here at NESS.

  • NESS & Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center

    Kayak Fishing and Nature Discovery (Ages 11-15)

    Week 6:  July 27-31     9:00 am - 4:00 pm

    $410 members of DPNC/$460 nonmembers

    A full day partnership program between Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center & NESS

    Begin the day in Stonington where experienced kayakers and anglers can bring their skills to the next level.  Concentration is on the basics of fishing from a kayak, tying knots, baiting hooks, cleaning gear and fish safety.  Catch and release only.  Bring your own rod, or some are available through NESS.  Call 860-535-9362 to inquire.  After lunch, campers will make some connections between the Moon and oceans at the Nature Center, meet animals and relax in the woods.  Afternoon pick up at the Nature Center.

    After camp is available @ DPNC 4-5:30pm $50 members/ $60 nonmembers

    Morning drop-off is at NESS and afternoon pick-up will be at DPNC. Registration will be handled by DPNC at 860-536-1216.

    Kite Engineers  March wind is known for coming in like a lion and out like a lamb. Embrace the conditions by conducting an engaging kite engineering project! Experiment with kite designs, surface area, materials, and wind power to find out what it takes to launch a kite into the sky.    

    Launch Zone Get ready for some high flying engineering!  Learn about the laws of physics while working in teams to build a raw egg bungee jump and a sneaker launcher to see how far you can stretch your engineering skills.

    Saturdays  9:30 am-7:00 pm:

    Sundays 11:30 am-5:00 pm:

    $60 for up to 4 people, $20 each additional person up to 6. $20 for additional hour

    If you have taken our intermediate class and are looking to further your skills then this is the class for you. Our Instructor will guide you as needed while you take advantage of sailing around Fishers Island Sound working on the skills you have learned. NO need to own a boat, just use ours. Must schedule 2 days in advance, weather permitting.   Prices shown are for 2 hours, max of 3 hours per outing.   Please call the NESS office for reservations. 

    For Sailors with Experience:

    For those who already have sailing experience, schedule a checkout sail, and an instructor will make sure that you are ready to take our boats out all summer!  If you would like more instruction in a relaxed environment, our private lessons are a great way to build your confidence on the water.  Please call the NESS office for more information and reservations.  Checkout sails are $50 and take 1 hour, call our office to schedule an appointment.
