  • Jr. Marine Videography (Grades K-4)

    Use the NESS aquariums to film and photograph animals, algae, and animal behaviors.  Work in teams to make a creative and fun short film dedicated to ocean awareness and appreciation.  Learn some basics of filming, photography, and video editing.  Use Go Pros, iPads, underwater cameras, and share the videos with other NESS students.

    What does the shape of a fish have in common with a sports car, the honey combs of a bee with a chair, and a butterfly with clothing?  The answer is these living organisms are influencing the way people are designing new and more efficient technologies.  Make your own investigations by looking at a variety of natural objects, using microscopes, designing your own new product, and promoting your prototype to NESS Judges.

  • Geocaching in Your Kayak (Grades 5-8)

    Cost: $60/series

    Learn basic navigation to participate in the fun hobby of Kayak Geocaching! Geocaching is a real life treasure hunt using a device that has GPS. Use charts, compasses, navigation, and GPS to track your kayak path. Make an item to let other geocachers know we’ve discovered a particular treasure, participate in the first ever NESS geocache kayak trail and go geocaching in different locations around Stonington and beyond! No previous kayaking experience is necessary, but an interest in the ocean, snorkeling, and kayaking is a must for this adventure week.

    Ocean Films (All Day, 9 am - 4 pm)

    In this full day program, venture into the outdoors to film and photograph animals, ecosystems, and adventure.  Work in teams to make a creative and fun short film dedicated to ocean awareness and appreciation.  Use your videos to share with other NESS students and look to enter your videos into the San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival.  Includes: Full Day Programming, basic videography and photography, boat trips, & snorkel adventures

  • Week 7 (August 7-11)

    Identified Flying Objects (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Explore the science behind flight by looking at animal wings and feathers under microscopes, going on a bird and insect hunt, testing seed floating abilities, and engineering your own kite.  Take a trek on a Sonar sail boat to learn about lift, look to the water to see how some animals glide underwater, fly down the face of waves, and make your own rubber band airplane creation.  Includes: boogie boarding, sonar sailing, engineering, boat trips, & snorkel adventures

    Take on new invention requests from amusement park designers, vehicle specialists, environmental debris experts, and look into ways to create new products to make our everyday lives easier.  Build and design prototypes in a variety of ways.  Test and market your products to your classmates and the NESS Innovation Imagination Brain Trust.  Get out into the field for inspiration and to test some designs.  Includes: engineering, boat trips, & snorkel adventures

    Ecosystem Treasure Hunt (PM Session, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)  Cost: $35   Minimum 6 students

    Paper Airplane PandemoniumDesign your very own paper airplane while learning about aerodynamics, and the weight of materials.  Test out other designs and see how far and fast your airplane can go! 

    Ecosystem Treasure Hunt Follow maps and clues to reach different ecosystems and find the natural treasures within the environment.  Use compasses, microscopes, and animal evidence to decipher the hints to reveal and find your destinations. 
    Remember to dress warmly as we will be outside!

    Watersport Adventure Enjoy a taste of kayaking or stand-up paddle boarding, and take the first exciting step in learning to surf by practicing your stance, balance, paddle technique, and duck dives safely in the Harbor.  All programs will be done safely in the harbor or on land. * Come prepared to get wet!

    Marble Maze Craze Learn the basics of physics with the fun challenge.  Working in teams and using force, friction and gravity create a maze through which a marble can travel.  Compete with other teams to see which marble moves the slowest and get extra points for creativity and team work!
