  • Big Boat Cruising (Ages 16+)

    Saturdays; July 8, July 22, August 5, August 19, September 2; 9:00 am-1:00 pm        

    Spend your Saturday cruising Fisher's Island Sound in one of NESS' 35' cruising boats! Along with an instructor, learn the ins and outs of what it takes to be a part of a team that runs a big sailboat, nothing can be done alone! We cover rigging/de-rigging, reefing, navigation, and sea-safety on big sailboats. This course is perfect for the experienced sailor looking for an introduction to larger sailboats, as well as sailors who just want more sea-time!

  • Week 3 (July 6-10)

    Water Craft Commotion (AM Session, 9 am - 12 pm)

    Water crafts come in all shapes and sizes and have all kinds of incredible capabilities. Become familiar with some water crafts as you drive a remote operated vehicle (ROV) underwater, test the speed of a kayak, experiment with the stability of a stand up paddle board, and try out the power of a sail boat. Conduct experiments to tell you more about each craft and even design your own!

  • Week 1 (June 22-26)

    Action Animals (AM Session, 9 am - 12 pm)

    Animals do all kinds of wild and crazy actions. Look into some incredible animal behaviors like hunting, hiding, communicating, posturing, and mimicking. Be surprised by what you uncover as you explore different environments, perform experiments, and carry out a squid dissection.

  • Week 9 (Aug. 17-21)

    NESS PhD (AM Session, 9 am - 12 pm)

    Become an oceanographer, meteorologist, paleontologist, kymatologist, and phonologist. You will earn your NESS PhD as you explore ocean dynamics, weather, prehistoric life, waves, and animal sounds and language! Bring learning to life through simulations, experiments, boogie boarding, and ecosystem excursions. Includes: boogie boarding, microscopes, boat trips, and snorkel adventures.

  • Afterschool Opti Racing (Ages 8-13)

    Tuesdays 4:00-6:00pm           May 5, 12, 19, 26 & June 2, 9

    Enrollment: minimum 4 students

    Cost: $155/series   

    Eager to get back on the water? The Opti Afterschool Racing class will focus on racing techniques, boathandling, boat speed and specific boat setup. Speed and proper technique will be a central part of the daily topics. If you want to get a jump start on the summer season then this is the perfect opportunity for you.
     
  • Family Snorkeling

    Saturdays & Sundays; September 12, 13, 19, 20, 26 & 27

    1:00-3:00 pm

    Minimum: 6 participants               Cost: $30/participant/class

    Jump into the ocean world with your family by safely snorkeling the waters of Fishers Island Sound!  A NESS instructor will guide you through the basics of snorkeling, and will transport you to remote snorkeling locations by boat.  No experience in snorkeling is necessary, but comfort in the water is a must.  Class includes use of a life jacket, mask and snorkel, and wetsuit.  Sign up for some or all sessions.

  • Powerboat - Boathandling 101 (Ages 12+)

    This 4-hour hands-on, on-the-water course gets you behind the wheel right away. Learn as you are behind the wheel and by watching others perform basic boat handling maneuvers that will help build confidence. This is a great basic "get out and practice" class that is sure to be a confidence builder. This is not a certification class.
     
  • ROVer Challenge (All Ages)

    Wednesday, September 28th

    10:00 am-12:00 pm

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $20

    Calling all engineers and divers for this one day challenge!  In teams, draft, design, engineer, and compete as you build your own MATE – ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle).  Focus on buoyancy, pressure with depth, density, and hydrodynamic shapes and sizes.  Take the ROVer challenge as you maneuver in and around water obstacles with a goal to be inducted into the NESS "Abyssal Hall of Fame!"

     
  • Land Sailors (All Ages)

    Wednesday, November 30

    10:00 am-12:00 pm

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $20

    Design, engineer, and compete in teams against fellow classmates as you build a land sailor that harnesses the power of wind using a sail, a PVC frame, and wheels.  Calculate speed as you and your team experiments with different frame designs, sail shapes and sizes, and wheel placement.
