    Explore water like you’ve never before with this interdisciplinary badge!  Try a new water skill like kayaking, or boogie boarding, read and discuss “The Hungry Ocean” by Capt. Linda Greenlaw, investigate endangered marine life, and share your knowledge and concerns with the general public, all with a marine scientist!
     
  • Bait Fishing & Aquaculture (ages 11-17)

    Includes: aquaculture, fishing, boat trips and snorkel adventures.    $210/week

    Combine the science of aquaculture and the adventure of bait fishing as you learn to catch, classify, and grow a variety of small bait fish. Use nets, live tanks and monitoring systems to grow a sustainable stock. Use seine nets, dip nets, cast nets, aquaculture tanks, and water monitoring equipment to investigate the science and engineering behind bait aquaculture.

    $50 per hour, minimum 2 hours
    $25 per hour for each additional person.

    Can't seem to figure out those tell tales? Want to fly a spinnaker with someone who knows what they are doing? Or are you just looking for someone to simplify things and slow things down. Private lessons are a great way to get some real one on one with our top instructors. Sign up individually or as a group! Please contact our office for further details or to set up a private sailing lesson.
     
  • Week 4 (July 13-17)

    Salty Dogs (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Leave the landlubbers behind and become a salty dog as you submerse yourself in the realm of boats and buoyancy. Perform experiments based on the forces of floating, design your own model boat, and become Captain of your own vessel by getting a taste of sailing safely in an Opti and paddling a kayak! Sing some sea shanties, learn about life on sailing ships from our past, and even hear about dogs that went to sea with their sailor owners. Includes: 1 boat trip in the harbor aboard the Dodson’s Launch.

  • Week 3 (July 6-10)

    Blue Water Adventures (Full Day Session, 9 am - 4 pm)

    Be immersed in sailing and science as you adventure into the ocean blue! Join us on PFlash, the NESS 35 foot J-105, as our teaching platform to build teamwork, rotate through multiple stations, and learn the basics of being crew on an offshore boat. Anchor at different sites for marine science field excursions by foot and snorkel! Bring a lunch and eat with friends during this full day experience. Includes: full day programming, sailing, marine science, and snorkel adventures.

  • Week 10 (Aug 24-28)

    Choose Your Own Adventure (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Take part in this outdoor adventure as you and your classmates choose from activities like kayaking, boogie boarding, snorkeling, marine science field excursions, fishing and more! Learn the basics of choosing your adventure based on weather, wind, waves, navigation and local history while exploring Long Island Sound. Options include: boogie boarding, fishing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, boat trips, and snorkel adventures.

  • Animals Do What to Survive?

    Saturday, November 14            10:00-11:30 am

    Minimum: 6 participants               Cost: $15/student, $5/parent

    Animals need to do a lot to survive the harsh environment they live in but what specifically do marine animals need to do? Come and answer these questions with some hands on activities with the animals that live at NESS. Learn what and how they eat, how they move and most importantly how they protect themselves. Afterwards, show all that you have learned and create your own animal with its own adaptations.   

     
  • Coastal Crusaders (Ages 10-13)

    July 18-22, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm  $190/week

    Includes: taste of surfing, kayaking, boogie boarding, stand up paddleboarding, snorkel adventures, playing in the salt pond & the ocean   

    Become a coastal crusader as you explore the coastline by kayaking, boogie boarding, stand-up paddle boarding, and identifying snorkel spots through local chart navigation readings.  Analyze coastline changes, sift through ways to prevent beach erosion, and discover coastal ecosystems.  Take the first exciting step in learning to surf by practicing your stance, balance, paddle technique, duck dives, and get a taste of riding waves.
