    Dive into the role of an animal husbandry specialist as you build your own aquarium habitat! Decide as a team for what sediment, algae, and animals will reside in your tank.  Take ownership as you learn to care for your animals and use water chemistry tests to make sure your aquarium is a healthy ecosystem.  Analyze animal behavior, look into animal training techniques, and experiment with training approaches.  Includes:  aquarium care, boat trips, & snorkel adventures

    Science of Bioluminescence (AM Session, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm)   Cost: $40    Minimum 6 students

    Rainbows & Prisms (PM Session, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm) Cost: $40    Minimum 6 students

    Science of Bioluminescence  Take a peek into a dark world where animals use light to communicate and discover bioluminescence.  Investigate how angler fish, fireflies and comb jellies make light, create your own bioluminescent animals, and discover just how tricky in can be to live in a completely darkened environment.   

    Rainbows & Prisms Explore the science and myths behind prisms and rainbows.  Learn all about the science of prisms, discover the colors of the rainbow, create your own rainbow, and investigate how white light is made of such beautiful colors.  Finally hear about myths from many cultures are relating to rainbows.

    Bubble Science (AM Session, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm)   Cost: $40    Minimum 6 students

    Plant Science (PM Session, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm) Cost: $40    Minimum 6 students

    Bubble Science Bubbles are fascinating, simple things that can be scientifically amazing!  Experiment with different types of bubble solutions, create bubble wands, and experiment with what would cause a bubble to pop.  Come ready to get wet and soapy!   

    Plant Science March is often considered the beginning of spring and with march comes spring flowers and other awesome plants.  Learn how some plants grow and survive, investigate meat eating plants, sample and press your own plants to make a herbarium, and create your own biome in a baggie.

     
  • Beyond Intermediate - Summer 2015

    Weekdays: June 22 - August 26  12:00-6:00 pm 

    Saturdays & Sundays: June 20 - August 23  10:00 am-5:00 pm

    $60 for up to 4 people, $20 each additional person up to 6. $20 for additional hour

    If you have taken our intermediate class and are looking to further your skills then this is the class for you. Our Instructor will guide you as needed while you take advantage of sailing around Fishers Island Sound working on the skills you have learned. NO need to own a boat, just use ours. Must schedule 2 days in advance, weather permitting.   Prices shown are for 2 hours, max of 3 hours per outing.   Please call the NESS office for reservations. 

    For Sailors with Experience:

    For those who already have sailing experience, schedule a checkout sail, and an instructor will make sure that you are ready to take our boats out all summer!  If you would like more instruction in a relaxed environment, our private lessons are a great way to build your confidence on the water.  Please call the NESS office for more information and reservations.  Checkout sails are $50 and take 1 hour, call our office to schedule an appointment.

    Create, catch, feed and clean! Learn the art of being an aquarist as you build your own aquarium habitat from the gravel up. Decide as a team what sediment, algae, and animals will reside in your tank. Use water chemistry tests to make sure your aquarium is safe for your animals. Includes: aquarium care, kayak and snorkel adventures into the second biggest aquarium in the world, the Atlantic Ocean!         $215
     
  • Life of a Scientist (ages 4-6)

    Thursdays 2:00-3:30pm            May 7, 14, 21 & 28

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $80

    Gather information as you and your fellow scientists make concoctions, dissect a fish, and use experiments to help understand the mechanisms of the natural world. Explore local environments, use the scientific method, look into microscopes, and unlock some of mother Earth’s secrets!

  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (Grades K-4)

    Fridays, 4:00-5:30 pm        April 8, 15 & 29 *no class April 22*

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $60

    All humans produce trash but how do you deal with it?  Help NESS scientists come up with a plan to deal with marine debris by collecting trash from a nearby beach, create useable items form recycled materials and create a poster to make the local community aware of their options to deal with their household trash.
