  • Life of an Aquarist (Grades K-4)

    Mondays, 4:00-5:30 pm        April 4, 11 & 25 *no class April 18*

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $60

    Create, catch, feed and clean!  Learn the art of being an aquarist as you build your own aquarium habitat from the gravel up.  Decide as a team for what sediment, algae, and animals will reside in your tank.  Use water chemistry tests to make sure your aquarium is safe for your animals.    

     
  • Marine Debris (Grades 1-4)

    Wednesdays 4 pm - 5:30 pm          

    November 2, 9 & 16

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $60

    Investigate the problem of marine debris by learning about “The Great Trash Island”, creating an ROV to assist in collecting debris from the bottom of the ocean, and generating possible solutions for our future.  Participate in a trash clean-up and analyze data on the debris found.  Dress warmly for a portion of outside class time.

  • NESS ROVer Challenge (Ages 5-12)

    Wednesday, November 1st, 9:00 am-12:00 pm

    Cost: $35

    Work in teams to design and test a remotely operated vehicle (ROV).  Study the impact of marine debris and the influence of currents and gyres.  Take the ROV Marine Debris Challenge and outfit your ROV with the ability to gather any marine debris in its path.  Perform a beach clean-up and enter your debris findings into a nationwide data base.

     
  • Body, Balance & Mind (Ages 11-17)

    Incudes: stand up paddle boarding, surfing & boat rides    $270/Week

    Be introduced to two incredible sports that will keep you fit, focused and balanced! Give your body the boost of energy it needs by refreshing your senses and having fun on the ocean.  Explore Stonington Harbor on stand up paddle boards, while stretching, relaxing and testing your core balance. Ride the crystal clear waves off Rhode Island beaches during surf class. No previous experience is needed, but an interest in the ocean and being active is a must.  This class is perfect for new or returning students.

    Puff Car Competition (AM Session, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm)   Cost: $40   Minimum 6 students

    Ecosystem Treasure Hunt (PM Session, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)  Cost: $40   Minimum 6 students

    Puff Car Competition Build and race your own alternative energy vehicle that is powered by you!  Compare and graph how your vehicle does compared to other students and finally race your vehicle in the first ever Puff Car Grand Prix! 

    Ecosystem Treasure Hunt Follow maps and clues to reach different ecosystems and find the natural treasures within the environment.  Use compasses, microscopes, and animal evidence to decipher the hints to reveal and find your destinations.  Remember to dress warmly as we will be outside!

    Watershed Wonders (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Discover our amazing local watersheds and figure out where our water flows and goes. Venture on a watershed kayak journey, analyze water quality and the health of the watershed, build experimental models, discover if Davy Jones’ Locker is real, and invent new ways of keeping our local waterways clean. View a variety of residential and migratory animals that reside in our local watershed. Includes: Kayaking, boat Trips, snorkel adventures.

  • Webelos: Wildlife Conservation Pin and Naturalist Badge

    2 classes/2 hours per class     $60/participant
    Minimum 6 students; 2 chaperones

    1 class meets at NESS / 1 class meets at Barn Island

    Earn your Naturalist Badge and Wildlife Conservation Pin with a badge counselor from NESS!  Learn about aquatic ecosystems and wetlands by looking at the ecology of these important biomes.  Some activities include:

    • Identifying producers, consumers and decomposers
    • Learning different ways animals camouflage themselves
    • Participate in a beach clean-up or service project.

     
  • Week 6 (July 27-31)
