Gain animal and ecosystem knowledge, look into thriving and endangered populations, develop an ecotourism plan to benefit humans and animals, and help with local marine monitoring of protected areas. Develop and carry out a project that will give back to the ocean to help keep it safe and clean for our futures. Accept the ocean’s rewards as you have fun exploring, boogie boarding, kayaking, and snorkeling. Includes: boogie boarding, kayaking, boat trips, and snorkel adventures.

  • ROVs & Marine Debris (Ages 10-13)

    August 15-19, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm  $190/week

    Includes: ROVs, snorkel adventures, playing in the salt pond & the ocean   

    Work in teams to design and test a remote operated vehicle (ROV).  Learn about the impact of marine debris and the influence of currents and gyres.  Take the ROV Marine Debris Challenge to outfit your ROV with the ability to gather any marine debris in its path.  Use your imagination and creativity to recycle clean and safe debris and enter it in the NESS Marine Debris Sculpture Creation Contest.

    Life of an Aquarist (AM Session, 9 am - 12 pm)

    Create, catch, feed, and clean as you jump into the life of an aquarist!  In teams, build an aquarium habitat from the gravel up while looking into animal behavior and learning what it takes to make and sustain a thriving saltwater mini-ecosystem.  Decide what sediment, algae, and animals will reside in your aquarium as you learn to care for your system and the life in your tank.  Includes: aquariums, at least 1 boat trip, & snorkeling

  • Fishing Merit Badge

    3 classes/1-½ hours per class     $60/student

    Minimum 6 students; 2 chaperones      Please call for availability, 860-535-9362.

    Fishing is not just throwing a hook in the water and hoping you’ll catch something. To be a successful fisher you must educate yourself on fish biology and habits.  Join a NESS badge counselor to earn your Fishing Merit Badge!  Activities include:
    • Learn the basics of fishing.
    • Tie basic fishing knots, bait hooks, and clean gear.
    • Practice fishing safety.
    • Try your hand at catching a fish.


    By becoming more aware of our local fisheries and participating in fishing, students are placed in a position to care for the environment from which they benefit.  Students can bring their own fishing rods and tackle ready for use.   NESS rods are available and bait will be provided.

    Amazing Marine Animals Dive into the amazing lives of marine animals.  Each day study a new type of marine animal and learn how they survive in their environments.  Study the hydrodynamics of penguins, the songs of whales, the anatomy of fish, and how sea stars really eat (hint: they have take-out!)
