  • Bear Scouts: Water & Soil Conservation Elective

    2 class/1½ hours per class     $45/participant
    Minimum 6 students; 2 chaperones
    Please call for availability, 860-535-9362.  

    Learn the science of water and soil conservation by helping to take care of the coastal environment.  Identify soil layers, conduct soil experiments, identify different types of water pollutions and finish the day by helping clean up local environments. 
    1 class meets at NESS / 1 class meets at Napatree Point.
     
  • Week 4 (July 13-17)

    Boards & Ecology (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Investigate the incredible relationships of animals while linking concepts to fun filled adventures of stand up paddle boarding, boogie boarding, and a taste of surfing. Link ecology concepts of biotic and abiotic factors, biomimicry, and human and animal interactions to adventures sports. Includes: 1 day taste of surfing, stand up paddle boarding, boogie boarding, boat trips, and snorkel adventures.

  • Week 10 (August 22-26)

    Apex Animals (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Animals within a food chain have some ultimate adaptations for hunting and survival.  Learn about apex predators like orcas, sharks, giant squid, and osprey and find out some incredible strategies the prey of these predators utilize to avoid detection.  Analyze the animals in the NESS touch tanks for interesting behaviors and dissect a shark. 
    Includes: dissection, 1 boat trip, & snorkeling

  • Sailing Science (Ages 4-12)

    Wednesday, June 1    1:30-3:30 pm

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $35

    Climb aboard a Sonar and discover some of the science behind how a sailboat works, the basics about how a boat floats, and how to use the power of wind.  Sail safely in the Stonington area during this wonderful learning and sailing experience.

    Come ride the ocean on a variety of water craft including stand up paddle boards, kayaks, boogie boards and even surfboards safely in the harbor.  Relate adventures to buoyancy, ocean forces, marine debris, animal habitats, and animal diversity.  Includes: a taste of surfing in the harbor, boogie boarding, stand up paddle boarding, kayaks, at least 1 boat trip, & snorkeling

    Someone or something has been fooling around within the NESS buildings and some outdoor sites. Become a sea sleuth and analyze the scene, decipher the clues, scrutinize the suspects, and find the culprit responsible for these baffling mysteries. Capers include geocaching, water phenomena, ocean animals, and microscopic investigations.  Includes: geocaching, at least 1 boat trip, & snorkeling
