    Decipher the long ago tales of pirates, giant squid, mermaids, and other myths of monsters and magical creatures.  Join a pirate posse to search for buried treasure using navigation and geocaching skills and validate or debunk Davy Jones’ Locker.  Get a taste of sailing, create your own magical creature, investigate stories from other cultures, and examine giant wave formation.  Includes: taste of sailing, boogie boarding (on small waves), geocaching, at least 1 boat trip, & snorkeling

    Inspect the bizarre, impressive, enchanting, purposeful, and beautiful shapes and sizes of plants and animals found locally and around the world.  Look into the importance of antlers, barbels, frills, hairs, lures, and whiskers.  Perform a plant dissection, use microscopes, and realize the variety of shapes and sizes of living organisms while investigating how habitats connect to this diversity.  Includes: microscopes, at least 1 boat trip, & snorkeling

    Join the NESS pack and discover the importance of schools, herds, colonies, flocks, and packs.  Investigate why animals live, hunt, travel, and rely on groups and communities for survival.  Explore some of the methods animals use to communicate in such close quarters.  Get out on the Dodson’s Boat Launch to search for fish schools below and bird flocks above.  Includes: 1 boat trip in the harbor aboard the Dodson’s Launch  


  • Week 6 (July 31-August 4)

    ROV Construction (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Design, create, build, and test a SeaPerch ROV.  Work as a team through the entire process from soldering circuits, water proofing electronics, experimenting with ROV shape and design, testing buoyancy, and perfecting ROV performance in the ocean through a series of fun and challenging scenarios.  Take one boat trip to test your design in the Sound.  Includes: 1 boat trip, Fabrication of SeaPerch ROVs, use of NESS ROV Shop Tools, tool instruction, ROV testing

    Wind Wave Escapades (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Harness the power of wind and waves for this combo science and adventure program.  Surf, sail, kayak, stand-up paddle board (SUP), and develop a renewable energy plan to utilize the power generated by the ocean.  Learn the basics of choosing your adventure based on weather, wind, waves, and navigation while exploring Long Island Sound.  Includes: 1 class of sailing, surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, boat trips, & snorkel adventures

    Ships & Sea Ahoy (PM Session, 1 pm-4 pm)

    Learn about all kinds of boats including sailing ships, Optis, kayaks, and even submarines.  Sing some sea shanties, discover exciting information about pirates, hear about long lost tales of the deep, and investigate ocean life along the shore.  Become a Captain and get a taste of kayaking and sailing while tied to the dock.  Includes: 1 boat trip in the harbor aboard the Dodson’s Launch.
