    Use the NESS aquariums to create your own thriving salt and freshwater aquaculture systems.  Pick a current NESS and local species to work with and create optimal living conditions for growth, breeding possibilities, and health.  Experiment with structures, substrates, and other variables.  Look into animal behavior, perform water quality tests, and get out into the field.   Use current NESS aquaculture systems to measure fish and analyze productivity.  Includes:  aquariums & aquaculture, boat trips, & snorkel adventures

  • TEST Week 1 (June 23-27)

    Ahoy Matey! (AM Session, 9 am -12 pm)

    Learn about all kinds of boats including sailing ships, Optis, kayaks, and even submarines. Sing some sea shanties, become a pirate, hear about long lost tales of the deep, and investigate ocean life along the shore. Captain your own sailboat while tied to the NESS pirate docks and get a taste of kayaking.
    Includes: 1 boat trip in the harbor aboard the Dodson's Launch.

    Animals Big & Small (PM Session, 1 pm -4 pm)

    The Earth has an incredible amount of animals, both big and small. Spend time investigating the mostly very small plankton and insects, hand-sized tide pool animals, and gigantic whales. Touch fur, skulls, teeth, and tusks. Compare some sea creatures to other creatures found on land.

    Pre-requisites: Opti Racing, Opti Green Fleet, and/or Instructor recommendation; minimum sailor weight 90 pounds, minimum 200 pounds total crew
    Intermediate Level - Come learn what it takes to be successful in fleet and team racing (the fun and challenging form of sailing as a team sport). Our experienced race coaches will challenge students to perfect their boat handling techniques, with the skipper and crew developing and refining coordination and mutual reliance. Students will work on improving and refining their boat-handling skills and developing together as a two-person team.   Students will be challenged to perfect their upwind and downwind sailing techniques and will learn to better use hiking straps, tiller extensions, and sail controls and will develop their spinnaker and trapeze skills.   Students will expand their knowledge of wind, weather, and tides, and will work on basic racing techniques and rules. Students will be encouraged to compete in the many local 420 regattas that we tow boats to by water.   All students will be under the supervision of our race coaches in class and at local regattas.   In addition to fleet racing, coaches will teach the techniques, tactics and rules of team racing through practice drills and a practice-race format.   The top students from this class will represent NESS in the ECSA All-Star Regatta, a college sailing formatted event hosted each year at the Coast Guard Academy in their fleets of Collegiate 420’s and FJ’s.   This class will also participate in the popular and fun ECSA team racing series.     All students will be under the supervision of our experienced race coaches in class and at both fleet and team racing regattas.
     
  • Hartley 12 Level 1 (ages 10-16)

    Beginner Level - The Hartley Level 1 class offers a great one week learn to sail program for older students. Students will learn basic sailing lingo, how to rig and how to sail on this new, slick boat.   Designed as a recreational level boat the Hartley 12 is the perfect boat to get started in the fun sport of sailing.

    Beginner Level - There is no better place to start learning the basics of sailing.   Come have fun on the water while learning the language of sailing, rigging, sail handling and steering in a stable boat designed for kids.   Students will be encouraged to sail solo when ready and increase their on-the-water confidence.   This is a four week program that is a true learn to sail class.

    Watershed Wonders Discover our amazing local watersheds and figure out where our water flows and goes. Venture on a watershed kayak journey, analyze water quality and the health of the watershed, build experimental models, discover if Davy Jones’ Locker is real, and invent new ways of keeping our local waterways clean. View a variety of residential and migratory animals that reside in our local watershed.   

    STEAM Challenges Use science, technology, engineering, art, and math to undertake these exciting STEAM challenges.  Learn about the field of Biomimicry as you develop a product based on nature to design and market to the NESS judges, take the marble maze craze challenge, build a model catapult, and investigate wind power using iPads and experiment with wind turbine shapes.

     
  • US Sailing Level 1 Practice Course (Ages 15+)

    One-day course, from 9:00 am-2:00 pm        Cost: $150

    Designed by our Level 1 Instructor Trainer this class is designed to help your teenager gain powerboat confidence before attending their US Sailing Level 1 course. Topics covered will be both on-the-water and classroom topics that will need to be known to pass the powerboating section of the Level 1 class. This class does not guarantee you will pass the powerboating section of the level one however our instructor will direct you on what to practice and focus on before attending your level 1.

    Intermediate Level - Students will be challenged to perfect their sailing techniques, learn to use hiking straps and tiller extensions, and expand their knowledge of wind, weather and upwind sailing.   Students will be introduced to basic racing techniques and will be encouraged to participate in local Green Fleet regattas, which are designed for new racers.   All students will be under the supervision of our instructors and coaches in class and at specific local regattas.   Be on the lookout for your ECSA regatta booklet which has all the regatta information in it that will be handed out during the first week of programs. Typically your child will participate in 6-8 regattas over the 8 week summer.   Regatta fees are not included and typically range from $25-$35 per event.

    Intermediate to Advanced Level - Students will work on more advanced boat handling techniques, including roll tacks and jibes, and will be introduced to more racing tactics, strategies and techniques.   Sailors will learn what it takes to progress to the next level of Opti racing and will be expected to compete in local Opti regattas where Red, White and Blue fleets are formed by age.   Having your own racing level Opti is an advantage at this stage and students are encouraged to bring their own boats.   All students will   be under the supervision of our race coach in class and at specific local regattas.   Last summer we supported and coached our sailors in 7 local day-long Opti regattas and expect to support about the same number of events this year.   Regatta fees are not included.
