  • Week 4 (July 13-17)

    Coastal Crusaders (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Become a coastal crusader as you explore the coastline by kayaking, boogie boarding, stand-up paddle boarding, and identifying snorkel spots through local chart navigation readings. Analyze coastline changes, sift through ways to prevent beach erosion, and discover coastal ecosystems. Take the first exciting step in learning to surf by practicing your stance, balance, paddle technique, duck dives, and get a taste of riding waves. Includes: taste of surfing, kayaking, boogie boarding, stand up paddle boarding, boat trips, and snorkel adventures.


  • Week 5 (July 20-24)

    Watershed Wonders (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Discover our amazing local watersheds and figure out where our water flows and goes. Venture on a watershed kayak journey, analyze water quality and the health of the watershed, build experimental models, discover if Davy Jones’ Locker is real, and invent new ways of keeping our local waterways clean. View a variety of residential and migratory animals that reside in our local watershed. Includes: Kayaking, boat Trips, snorkel adventures.


  • Week 6 (July 27-31)

    Surf, SUP, Science (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Make the connection between science and adventure! Experiment with board stability while stand up paddle boarding, analyze wave dynamics with a taste of surfing and boogie boarding, and learn about some of the natural animal surfers that utilize the power of waves and currents. Design new ways to improve the boards you ride as you experiment with buoyancy, surface area, and density. Includes: taste of surfing, stand up paddle boarding, boogie boarding, boat trips, and snorkel adventures.


  • Week 7 (Aug. 3-7)

    Long Lost Ocean Tales (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Ever wanted to search for real-life treasure? Ever wonder if the maritime myth of Davy Jones is true? Dive into marine myths and historical truths by exploring Fisher’s Island Sound and experimenting in the lab. Search for treasure by geocaching, investigate the complicated world of a pirate, try your luck at fishing, search the harbor on a kayak, and separate fact from fiction through adventure learning! Includes: fishing, geocaching, kayaking, boat trips and snorkel adventures.


  • Week 8 (Aug. 10-14)

    Vehicles to Adventures (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Hovercrafts, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, ROV’s and even submarines. Become familiar with all kinds of water craft as you drive a remote operated vehicle (ROV) underwater, test the speed of a kayak, experiment with the stability of a stand up paddle board, build a raft within a team, and conduct experiments to tell you more about each marine craft! Includes: ROV’s, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, boat trips, and snorkel adventures.


  • Junior Lifeguards (Ages 10-13)

    June 29 – July 3, Aug 3 - 7, Mon-Fri 1:00 - 4:00 pm     $190/week

    Includes: surf and ocean rescue, skills in first aid and CPR, boogie boarding, body surfing, beach/water flags and race relays
    This is not a certifying class.

    Learn the basics of what it takes to be a lifeguard. This program promotes teamwork, leadership, and aquatic safety while introducing students to professional opportunities. Get quality water safety education on ocean and beach hazards, including rip currents, waves and tides. Gain an understanding on beach ecology and marine life and learn respect for the environment and for themselves, their parents, and their peers
  • Wild Survival (Ages 10-13)

    July 6 - 10, Mon-Fri 1:00 - 4:00 pm       $190/week

    Includes:  kayaking, and snorkel adventures

    Do you think you could survive if you were alone in the wilderness? Come and learn survival techniques such as navigation, using a map and compass, build a shelter from what you find, capture your own food using fish traps, cast nets and seine nets and learn to track some of the local native species. Explore by foot, through kayaking and snorkeling.
  • Brownies: Wonders of Water Journey

    4 classes/1½ hours per class     $80/student

    NOTE: 1 Class will meet at Barn Island Marsh. 
    Troops should come with WOW Journey Books for each scout.

    Explore the wonders of water with a marine scientist from NESS!  Discover the water cycle and how the properties of water affect the planet, explore underwater habitats using remotely operated vehicles, navigate marshes and learn about erosion, glaciers and the power of water all while working through the Brownies Wonders of Water Journey book.
  • Bait Fishing & Aquaculture (ages 11-17)

    Includes: aquaculture, fishing, boat trips and snorkel adventures.    $210/week

    Combine the science of aquaculture and the adventure of bait fishing as you learn to catch, classify, and grow a variety of small bait fish. Use nets, live tanks and monitoring systems to grow a sustainable stock. Use seine nets, dip nets, cast nets, aquaculture tanks, and water monitoring equipment to investigate the science and engineering behind bait aquaculture.

    Aquarium Biomes (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Mimic and replicate the natural marine biomes in your own aquarium. As a team, decide what organisms will reside in your tank, venture into the field to catch your species, record animal behavior, and be imaginative in creating the habitat. Perform water chemistry experiments including dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity, temperature, nitrogen, and ammonia in order to ensure a safe aquarium environment. Take part in feeding, cleaning, habitat creation, and presenting your aquarium creations to your class.
