    Get in the zone and discover the amazing diversity of life in layers.  Investigate the layers of the ocean depths all the way to the deep sea, the tidal zones of the shoreline, and the effects of marine debris on all levels of the water column.  Experiment with the influences of density, fish to see what you can catch at different depths, learn about specialized niches, and dissect a fish.  Includes: fishing, fish dissection, boat trips, & snorkel adventures

    Identified Flying Objects (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Explore the science behind flight by looking at animal wings and feathers under microscopes, going on a bird and insect hunt, testing seed floating abilities, and engineering your own kite.  Take a trek on a Sonar sail boat to learn about lift, look to the water to see how some animals glide underwater, fly down the face of waves, and make your own rubber band airplane creation.  Includes: boogie boarding, sonar sailing, engineering, boat trips, & snorkel adventures

    Engineering Extremes (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Design new structures that can withstand the extremes of mother nature.  Use simulations to test your structure designs and their abilities to withstand earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes.  Use the field of biomimicry to look at nature to see how plants and animals withstand the extremes.  Design new ways to prevent forces like wind and water from affecting a local area.   Includes:  Engineering, boat trips, & snorkel adventures

    Take on new invention requests from amusement park designers, vehicle specialists, environmental debris experts, and look into ways to create new products to make our everyday lives easier.  Build and design prototypes in a variety of ways.  Test and market your products to your classmates and the NESS Innovation Imagination Brain Trust.  Get out into the field for inspiration and to test some designs.  Includes: engineering, boat trips, & snorkel adventures

    Sundays 11:30 am-5:00 pm:

    September 6, 13, 20, 27; October 4, 11, 18, 25; November 1, 11

    $60 for up to 4 people, $20 each additional person up to 6. $20 for additional hour

    If you have taken our intermediate class and are looking to further your skills then this is the class for you. Our Instructor will guide you as needed while you take advantage of sailing around Fishers Island Sound working on the skills you have learned. NO need to own a boat, just use ours. Must schedule 2 days in advance, weather permitting.   Prices shown are for 2 hours, max of 3 hours per outing.   Please call the NESS office for reservations. 

    For Sailors with Experience:

    For those who already have sailing experience, schedule a checkout sail, and an instructor will make sure that you are ready to take our boats out all summer!  If you would like more instruction in a relaxed environment, our private lessons are a great way to build your confidence on the water.  Please call the NESS office for more information and reservations.  Checkout sails are $50 and take 1 hour, call our office to schedule an appointment.

    Summer is the best time of year for fishing, but you need the knowledge of fish habits to help narrow down the best fishing areas by boat and from shore. Open to both experienced and new anglers. Learn the basics of fishing, tying knots, baiting hooks, cleaning gear, and practicing fishing safety. Become more aware of local fisheries and fishing impacts. We practice catch and release only. Students should bring their own fishing rods and tackle ready for use. Some NESS rods are available and bait will be provided, please call to inquire.

  • Wind & Waves (Ages 11-17)

    Includes: surfing, windsurfing & boat rides    $260/week

    The power of the ocean is supreme, come learn to harness this power!  The ocean and its connections with land give us the ultimate tool to play with – strong winds and crashing waves. This week you will have the opportunity to utilize them both. Test your skills in harnessing the wind while riding on a windsurf board.  Learn how to predict, select and judge waves while surfing. Experience the incredible feeling of riding the wind and waves while gaining excellent upper body strength, balance and core fitness!

  • Body, Balance & Mind (Ages 11-17)

    Incudes: stand up paddle boarding, surfing & boat rides    $270/Week

    Be introduced to two incredible sports that will keep you fit, focused and balanced! Give your body the boost of energy it needs by refreshing your senses and having fun on the ocean.  Explore Stonington Harbor on stand up paddle boards, while stretching, relaxing and testing your core balance. Ride the crystal clear waves off Rhode Island beaches during surf class. No previous experience is needed, but an interest in the ocean and being active is a must.  This class is perfect for new or returning students.

    Pre-requisites:  Opti Learn to Sail or Opti Learn to Sail Step 2

    Beginner Level - This two week class is an extension of Opti Learn to Sail and is designed to continue the learning process for another two weeks. This class was designed with students in mind who are not quite ready for Green Fleet and who have just taken Opti Learn to Sail step 1 or Step 2.   Essentially a “Pre-green fleet” class students will be introduced to racing and will continue to work on their sailing solo skills.
