    Waves, waves and more waves! If you love being in the water and riding on waves, then this week is for YOU! We will be testing our water riding skills out on as many different types of boats & boards that we can. Boogie boarding, surfing, stand up paddle boarding & kayaking. This is the ultimate water adventure, testing your core, balance and fitness. No experience is necessary as long as you are comfortable on and in the water.We will teach you the basics! Come have fun in the sun while learning valuable ocean safety skills.

    Fishing 101 (PM Session, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)   Cost: $35   Minimum 6 students

    Geocaching Learn basic navigation to participate in the fun hobby of Geocaching!  Geocaching is a real life treasure hunt using a device that has GPS!  Join a NESS scientist as we learn about navigation on land and sea, make an item to let other geocachers know we’ve discovered a particular treasure, and go geocaching!   
    Remember to dress warmly as we will be outside!

    Fishing 101 Learn the basics of fishing and crabbing in time for spring fishing.  Get familiar with a rod & reel, knots, lure selection, and some local fish species.  Weather permitting get outside to see what you can catch from our docks.  Use an underwater viewing camera for a closer look at what may be about to bite.

    STEAM Challenges 2 (PM Session, 1 pm -4 pm)   Cost: $180   Minimum 6 students

    Ecosystem Excursions Get outside, explore diverse ecosystems, and even try your luck with fishing. Compare habitats, use an underwater live feed camera, utilize microscopes, and make observations of the organisms you find. Find out why certain animals thrive in specific areas and feed some of the amazing animals that live in the NESS aquariums.

    STEAM Challenges 2 Use science, technology, engineering, art, and math to undertake these new exciting STEAM challenges. Measure success through angles when creating a contraption to withstand the simulated pitch and roll of a boat, unlock the buoyancy mystery of Davy Jones' Locker, test the strength of bridge designs, and use your imagination and creativity to make a Rube Goldberg invention.

     
  • Beyond Intermediate - Summer 2015

    Weekdays: June 22 - August 26  12:00-6:00 pm 

    Saturdays & Sundays: June 20 - August 23  10:00 am-5:00 pm

    $60 for up to 4 people, $20 each additional person up to 6. $20 for additional hour

    If you have taken our intermediate class and are looking to further your skills then this is the class for you. Our Instructor will guide you as needed while you take advantage of sailing around Fishers Island Sound working on the skills you have learned. NO need to own a boat, just use ours. Must schedule 2 days in advance, weather permitting.   Prices shown are for 2 hours, max of 3 hours per outing.   Please call the NESS office for reservations. 

    For Sailors with Experience:

    For those who already have sailing experience, schedule a checkout sail, and an instructor will make sure that you are ready to take our boats out all summer!  If you would like more instruction in a relaxed environment, our private lessons are a great way to build your confidence on the water.  Please call the NESS office for more information and reservations.  Checkout sails are $50 and take 1 hour, call our office to schedule an appointment.

    Amazing Autotrophs (PM Session, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)  Cost: $40   Minimum 6 students

    Fishtopia Try your luck at fishing, scheme new ways to capture fish, and learn about local and global fisheries that catch the seafood we eat.  Simulate different fishing approaches through fun and engaging activities.  Learn about aquaculture and propose and design your own idea to the NESS Fishery Judges.  Remember to dress warmly as we will be outside!

    Amazing Autotrophs Take a peek inside the world of autotrophs (plants and organisms that make their own food).  Discover how autotrophs grow without eating, eat without mouths, and move without feet.  Create a herbarium, explore wild bacteria that call hydrothermal vents home and investigate the many human uses of these amazing organisms!

    Gyotaku & Fishing Lure Construction (AM Session, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm)   Cost: $40   Minimum 6 students

    Microscope Madness (PM Session, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm)  Cost: $40   Minimum 6 students

    Gyotaku & Fishing Lure Construction Use paint to print a real fish on paper, a shirt, a piece of cloth or another item of your choice while learning the proper methods and tricks to gyotaku.  Make a fishing lure by using your fish insight.  Select a plug, design a color scheme, create its appearance, wire and add hooks, and take it home!  NESS supplies real fish.  Bring your own T-shirt or other item of your printing choice. 

    Microscope Madness Use microscopes and document cameras to get up close and personal with a variety of creatures and prepared slides from the NESS lab!  View crab claws, animal fur, insects, and plankton.  Construct your own plankton and enter it in the NESS Plankton Olympics.
