    Beginner Level It’s never too early to get on the water! The Taste of Optis class is designed for kids aged 6-11 and does not require sailing experience.   Meant to be a fun group experience, it enables kids to get a taste of sailing in one week of instruction. Students will become familiar with water safety on the docks and in an optimist trainer, while learning what it feels like to be on the water.   Over the week the students will be introduced to the different parts of the boat, knots, rigging and steering.   One step at a time this is an important one to take in a nurturing environment with friendly and patient instructors.

    Beginner Level - This two-week class is designed to be a refresher course for kids who have taken Opti Learn to Sail-Step 1 and who are ready to continue their learn to sail process.    This class also offers a great option for students who have taken the Second Taste of Optis program and who want a two-week program to perfect all they have learned. Students will learn about sailing upwind and downwind, how to rig on their own and how to manage sailing solo all while having fun sailing around Stonington Harbor.

    Intermediate to Advanced Level -NEW COMBO CLASS!!!! Maximum variety is on offer with this class that will surely test your skills on the water in a super fun setting. One day you may be sailing solo in a Hartley, the next you may be part of a team going for a long sail on one of our keelboats. This class is designed for students who have learned the fundamentals of sailing and want to continue learning new skills and trying new experiences. Our Sonars and Hartley 12s will be the primary boats with NESS's J-105 rounding out the fleet for this class.

    Pre-requisites: Opti Advanced and/or Instructor recommendation

    Intermediate Level - Students will be challenged to perfect their sailing techniques, learn to use hiking straps and tiller extensions, and expand their knowledge of wind, weather and upwind sailing.   Students will be introduced to basic racing techniques and will be encouraged to participate in local Green Fleet regattas, which are designed for new racers.   All students will be under the supervision of our instructors and coaches in class and at specific local regattas.   Be on the lookout for your ECSA regatta booklet which has all the regatta information in it that will be handed out during the first week of programs. Typically your child will participate in 6-8 regattas over the 8 week summer.   Regatta fees are not included and typically range from $25-$35 per event.

    Aquaponic Adventures (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Jump into the world of aquaponics while learning about plant and animal relationships.  Help weigh and measure fish, use microscopes to look at plant root development, and engineer new structures for optimal plant growth.  In teams set up your own mini aquaponics system complete with animals, plants, and algae.  Includes: aquaponics engineering, at least 1 boat trip, & snorkeling

    Underwater Caves, Volcanoes and the Deep Sea The deep sea holds so many mysteries that the scientists call it “inner space”. Join our team of ocean explorers as we investigate the hidden world aboard the NESS Exploration Vessel. Study underwater caves and volcanoes, scrutinize unusual life forms and discover clues from the past!

    Kayak Adventure Join NESS for one of the last kayak adventures of the season!  Learn what makes a kayak float by learning about buoyancy.  Then grab a paddle, learn basic strokes and explore Stonington Harbor.  * Come prepared to get wet!

  • US Sailing Keelboat Certification Course (Ages 16+)

    July 1+2, July 15+16, July 29+30, Aug 12+13, Aug 15+16, Aug 26+27

    8:00 am - 6:00 pm

    NESS now offers a US Sailing Keelboat Basics Certification course, along with a full range of other sailing courses. This course will familiarize sailors with the operation and navigation of 18-27 foot sailboats. Our certification course adheres to the industry standard set by US Sailing, and is offered over two days- one weekend or two weekdays. The certification test is administered Wednesdays, or as scheduled by the student.
