    The 7th grade STEM Magnet Middle School students participating in the NESS program are ready for their next challenge! Last week students used computers to access real-time data and observed the trends of global current patterns in order to explore the interactions of our ocean atmosphere and understand its vital role in weather and climate.

  • Gallup Hill Prisms & Rainbows (Grades K-6)

    Friday, February 12th     1:15-4:15 pm

    Enrollment: minimum 10 students

    Cost: $40

    Explore the science and myths behind prisms and rainbows. Learn all about the science of prisms, discover the colors of the rainbow, create your own rainbow, and investigate how white light is made of such beautiful colors. Finally hear about myths from many cultures that relate to rainbows. Registration due: Feb. 5th, please contact Gallup Hill to register.

  • Squid Fishing

    Wednesday, October 28    5:30-7:30 pm   

    Minimum: 6 participants               Cost: $25/participant

    The temperatures have dropped and the squid are in. Come see what it's all about in this 2 hour guided program with NESS pro staff fisherman Caleb. Experience this exciting and unusual fishery. Learn the proper techniques for attracting, hooking and landing squid. With luck, see the bizarre color changes, flailing tentacles and ability to disappear right before your eyes. Bring a white t-shirt and get inked! This activity does not last long so make a reservation now!

    Science of Bioluminescence  Take a peek into a dark world where animals use light to communicate and discover bioluminescence.  Investigate how angler fish, fireflies and comb jellies make light, create your own bioluminescent animals, and discover just how tricky in can be to live in a completely darkened environment.

  • Opti Race Session 1 and/or Session 2     (ages 8 - 15)

    Session 1 June 22 - July 17, Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

    Session 2 July 20 - Aug 14, Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

    Bring your own boat…
    $740 Session 1 or 2;  $1,090 Full Season (8 weeks)

    Intermediate to Advanced Level - Students will work on more advanced boat handling techniques, including roll tacks and jibes, and will be introduced to more racing tactics, strategies and techniques.   Sailors will learn what it takes to progress to the next level of Opti racing and will be expected to compete in local Opti regattas where Red, White and Blue fleets are formed by age.   Having your own racing level Opti is an advantage at this stage and students are encouraged to bring their own boats.   All students will   be under the supervision of our race coach in class and at specific local regattas.   Last summer we supported and coached our sailors in 7 local day-long Opti regattas and expect to support about the same number of events this year.   Regatta fees are not included.
