  • ROVer Challenge (All Ages)

    Cost: $20

    Calling all engineers and divers for this one day challenge!  In teams, draft, design, engineer, and compete as you build your own MATE – ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle).  Focus on buoyancy, pressure with depth, density, and hydrodynamic shapes and sizes.  Take the ROVer challenge as you maneuver in and around water obstacles with a goal to be inducted into the NESS "Abyssal Hall of Fame!"

  • Opti Green Fleet (ages 8-12)

    June 26-July 7*, July 10-21, July 24-August 4, August 7-18, Mon–Fri, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

    $515 for one session (two weeks) OR $925 for two sessions (four weeks)
    Bring your own boat…

    Pre-requisites: Opti Advanced and/or Instructor recommendation

    Intermediate Level - Students will be challenged to perfect their sailing techniques, learn to use hiking straps and tiller extensions, and expand their knowledge of wind, weather and upwind sailing.   Students will be introduced to basic racing techniques and will be encouraged to participate in local Green Fleet regattas, which are designed for new racers.   All students will be under the supervision of our instructors and coaches in class and at specific local regattas.   Be on the lookout for your ECSA regatta booklet which has all the regatta information in it that will be handed out during the first week of programs. Typically your child will participate in 6-8 regattas over the 8 week summer.   Regatta fees are not included and typically range from $25-$35 per event.

  • Hartley's and Keelboats (ages 9-12)

    Intermediate to Advanced Level -NEW COMBO CLASS!!!! Maximum variety is on offer with this class that will surely test your skills on the water in a super fun setting. One day you may be sailing solo in a Hartley, the next you may be part of a team going for a long sail on one of our keelboats. This class is designed for students who have learned the fundamentals of sailing and want to continue learning new skills and trying new experiences. Our Sonars and Hartley 12s will be the primary boats with NESS's J-105 rounding out the fleet for this class.

  • Week 4 (July 13-17)

    ROV Construction (AM Session, 9 am - 12 pm)

    Design, create, build, and test a SeaPerch ROV. Work as a team through the entire process from soldering circuits, putting together motors and blades, water proofing electronics, experimenting with ROV shape, testing buoyancy, and perfecting ROV performance in the ocean through a series of fun and challenging scenarios. Take one boat trip to test your design in the Sound. Includes: 1 boat trip, Fabrication of SeaPerch ROVs, NESS ROV Shop Tools, tool instruction, ROV testing.

    $260/week

     
  • Junior Big Boat (ages 11-18)    

    Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm         $345/week

    July 13-17; August 3-7

    Pre-requisites: Any NESS Learn to Sail or by Instructor recommendation

    Intermediate Level - Jump aboard PFlash, NESS’s J-105, and learn how to sail something…well...a little bigger than an Opti or 420. Teamwork is the name of the game on this 35 footer as it takes the whole crew to get this boat going.   Students will rotate through multiple stations as they learn the basics of crewing on an offshore boat.  Two NESS instructors will be onboard including one of NESS's USCG licensed Captains.
     
  • Kayaking Merit Badge

    2 classes/2 hours per class     $55/participant

    Minimum 6 students; 2 chaperones  Please call for availability, 860-535-9362.

    Prerequisites:  Students must be able to pass the Boy Scouts of America Swim test. 
    Test will be given at the beginning of the class.

    Earn your kayaking badge with a badge counselor from NESS!  Learn safety while on the water in the classroom and then get on the water in one of our sit-on-top kayaks.  Some activities include:
    • Safely capsize and perform a wet exit in a kayak
    • Learn a forward stroke, backstroke, forward sweep, reverse sweep, draw stroke and stern draw
    • Paddle a buoyed course

    Troops should come with copies of “The Hungry Ocean” for each student.

    Explore water like you’ve never before with this interdisciplinary badge!  Try a new water skill like kayaking, or boogie boarding, read and discuss “The Hungry Ocean” by Capt. Linda Greenlaw, investigate endangered marine life, and share your knowledge and concerns with the general public, all with a marine scientist!
