  • Week 7 (Aug. 3-7)

    Science, Surf, Fish, Yak (Full Day Session, 9 am - 4 pm)

    Join NESS for a full day program experiencing all the different habitats Long Island Sound has to offer. Explore a barrier beach and the marshes behind it, go fishing in one of the best fishing spots in New England, experience a taste of surfing and boogie boarding, kayak, and snorkel in four different habitats. Includes: full day programming, taste of surfing, fishing, boogie boarding, stand up paddle boarding, boat trips and snorkel adventures.


  • Week 9 (Aug. 17-21)

    Choose Your Own Research (AM Session, 9 am - 12 pm)

    Pick a topic, investigate your hypothesis, carry out your experiment, and make a conclusion through the formation of your own research project. Utilize NESS gear including microscopes, plankton nets, aquariums, lab equipment, and water quality testing gear to carry out your project.   Work closely with one of our marine scientists and present your findings to your peers. Includes: marine research, boat trips, and snorkel adventures. </div>


  • Learn to Bic (ages 8-12)

    Monday – Friday, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm     $285/week

    June 22-26; July 6-10; July 20-24; Aug 3-7

    Pre-requisites: Opti Learn to Sail or Second Taste of Opti

    Intermediate Level - Our Learn to Bic class will introduce students who have already taken one of our taste or learn to sail classes how to sail another type of boat.     The O’pen Bic is a fast planning boat that allows students to feel the need for speed at an early age.   Designed specifically for kids, the O’pen BIC is a true glide machine for real excitement on the water.
  • Hartley 12 Level 1 (ages 10-16)

    Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm        $285/week

    June 22-26; July 6-10; July 20-24; Aug 3-7; Aug 17-21

    Pre-requisites, Level 1: none

    Beginner Level - New this year is the Hartley Level 1 class.   This replaces the 420 Level 1 program and offers a great one week learn to sail program for older students. Students will learn basic sailing lingo, how to rig and how to sail on this new slick boat.   Designed as a recreational level boat the Hartley 12 is the perfect boat to get started in the fun sport of sailing.
  • Week 6: July 27-31

    Junior Guards (Ages 9-14, 1 pm-4 pm)

    Get ready to have fun while learning how to become a future leader of the ocean! This is a great opportunity to get a basic overview in First Aid, CPR, AED, and waterfront rescue skills. There will be an emphasis towards physical fitness, oceanfront hazards, and marine ecology. This program also incorporates activities such as snorkeling, boogie boarding, beach flags and rescue tube relays. Students must be able to swim two laps continuously and tread water for one minute. This is not a certifying course.         $190

  • Sonar Sailing Science (ages 7-12)

    Mondays 2:00-4:00pm         May 11, 18 & June 1

    Enrollment: minimum 4 students

    Cost: $105

    Jump aboard one of our 23’ Sonar Sailboats and discover some of the science behind how a sailboat works.  Learn how to work as a team while a NESS Educator is on board teaching the basics about how a boat works, why we need wind and simple machines.  Sail around the safety of our harbor making keen observations all while having fun.

  • After School Powerboating - Boater's Ed (Ages 12 – 17)

    Tuesdays; 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm   April 7-28; May 5-26         Cost: $140

    Join a NESS USCG licensed captain and learn the basics of safe boating. Designed for young boaters who are interested in gaining knowledge and confidence in coastal navigation. Students will take to the water as they learn basic powerboat maneuvers in one of our 17' whalers. Skills covered include but are not limited to docking, anchoring, close quarters handling, basic safety and navigation.

  • Adult Snorkeling

    Saturdays; September 5, 12, 19 & 26   October 3 & 10

    10:00-12:00 pm

    Minimum: 6 participants               Cost: $40/class, $200/session

    Jump into the ocean world by safely snorkeling the waters of Fishers Island Sound while having fun and learning about marine life!  A NESS instructor will guide you through the basics of snorkeling, and will transport you to remote snorkeling locations by boat.  No experience in snorkeling is necessary, but comfort in the water is a must. Class includes use of a life jacket, mask and snorkel, and wetsuit.  Sign up for one or all class sessions!   

  • Astronomy (Grades 1-4)

    Mondays 4:00-5:30        November 2, 9 & 16

    Enrollment: minimum 7 students

    Cost: $60

    Go beyond Earth’s atmosphere to discover a world of constellations, comets, planets, and stars. Use experiments to decipher meteor impact, hear and make your own stories about constellations and stars, create your own alien that could live on one of the planets in our solar system, and look into the sky to identify some winter constellations. Dress warmly for a portion of outside class time.     

  • US Sailing Keelboat Certification Course (Ages 16+)


    July 1+2, July 15+16, July 29+30, Aug 12+13, Aug 15+16, Aug 26+27

    8:00 am - 6:00 pm

    NESS now offers a US Sailing Keelboat Basics Certification course, along with a full range of other sailing courses. This course will familiarize sailors with the operation and navigation of 18-27 foot sailboats. Our certification course adheres to the industry standard set by US Sailing, and is offered over two days- one weekend or two weekdays. The certification test is administered Wednesdays, or as scheduled by the student.
