    Let’s face it, seafood is delicious, but the path your seafood takes from water to waiter has varying impacts on the world’s ocean.  Experiment and simulate different fishing techniques to determine the best means of avoiding bycatch, overfishing, and habitat destruction.  Learn about aquaculture and propose and design your own idea to the NESS Fishery Judges.

    Cost: $80

    Learn more about our bodies and what we have in common with some of the amazing animals found in our world.  Compare your body size to a whale, compare a squid and clam through a dissection, and use microscopes to look into the world of animals without backbones.

    Have you ever noticed birds are all different shapes and sizes?  Learn the scientific principles behind these and other interesting outdoor activities including engineering paper airplanes and flying kites.  Discover local species of birds as we explore our shoreline in search of answers for flight.

    Cost: $20

    Disentangle the mysterious lives of sharks.  Perform a shark dissection, use microscopes to look at shark skin, hold shark artifacts, and investigate some amazing adaptations sharks have had since prehistoric times.

     
  • Life of an Aquarist (Grades K-4)

    Mondays, 4:00-5:30 pm        April 4, 11 & 25 *no class April 18*

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $60

    Create, catch, feed and clean!  Learn the art of being an aquarist as you build your own aquarium habitat from the gravel up.  Decide as a team for what sediment, algae, and animals will reside in your tank.  Use water chemistry tests to make sure your aquarium is safe for your animals.

    Cost: $60

    Get ready for some high flying engineering!  Learn about the laws of physics while working in teams to build a raw egg bungee jump and a sneaker launcher to see how far you can stretch your engineering skills.   

     
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (Grades K-4)

    Fridays, 4:00-5:30 pm        April 8, 15 & 29 *no class April 22*

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $60

    All humans produce trash but how do you deal with it?  Help NESS scientists come up with a plan to deal with marine debris by collecting trash from a nearby beach, create useable items form recycled materials and create a poster to make the local community aware of their options to deal with their household trash.    

     
  • Animals of the Ice (Grades K-4)

    Thursdays 4:00-5:30        January 7, 14, 21 & 28

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $80

    Penguins, Walruses, Polar Bears, Whales, and many more animals love the winter!  Do you?  Discover some of the amazing adaptations animals have to survive in freezing conditions.  Simulate penguins holding eggs, experiment with the color of polar bear fur and skin, investigate the warmth of blubber, and learn more about the animals who thrive in the ice.
