  • Race Technique Tuesdays (Ages 16+)

    Tuesdays; June 27, July 11, July 25, August 8, August 22; 5:30-7:30 pm

    Are you looking for a chance to workshop your spinnaker sets and douses? What about mark roundings, or racing starts? Our Tuesday Night clinics are the place for you! Focusing on a different topic every week, experienced and beginner sailors are all welcome as we explore in depth racing techniques. Bring your questions and be ready to learn! A brief chalk talk will be followed by on the water practice. Topics will be announced on our website prior to each class.  Max 4 students.

  • Week 2 (June 29-July 3)

    Aquatic Adventures (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Get a taste of sailing, kayaking, surfing, stand up paddle boarding, and windsurfing in this adventure program. Build your muscles with a taste of kayaking, feel the gentle rock and roll of a sailboat while tied to the dock, practice your balance using surfboards and learn the technique of pulling up a windsurf sail.

  • Week 4 (July 13-17)

    Coastal Crusaders (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Become a coastal crusader as you explore the coastline by kayaking, boogie boarding, stand-up paddle boarding, and identifying snorkel spots through local chart navigation readings. Analyze coastline changes, sift through ways to prevent beach erosion, and discover coastal ecosystems. Take the first exciting step in learning to surf by practicing your stance, balance, paddle technique, duck dives, and get a taste of riding waves. Includes: taste of surfing, kayaking, boogie boarding, stand up paddle boarding, boat trips, and snorkel adventures.

    Pre-requisites: Opti Learn to Sail and/or Instructor recommendation

    Intermediate Level - Students will be challenged to perfect their sailing techniques, learn to use hiking straps and tiller extensions, and expand their knowledge of wind, weather and upwind sailing.   Students will be introduced to basic racing techniques and will be encouraged to participate in local Green Fleet regattas, which are designed for new racers.   All students will be under the supervision of our instructors and coaches in class and at specific local regattas.   Be on the lookout for your ECSA regatta booklet which has all the regatta information in it that will be handed out during the first week of programs. Typically your child will participate in 6-8 regattas over the 8 week summer.   Regatta fees are not included and typically range from $25-$35 per event.

    Intermediate to Advanced Level - Students will work on more advanced boat handling techniques, including roll tacks and jibes, and will be introduced to more racing tactics, strategies and techniques.   Sailors will learn what it takes to progress to the next level of Opti racing and will be expected to compete in local Opti regattas where Red, White and Blue fleets are formed by age.   Having your own racing level Opti is an advantage at this stage and students are encouraged to bring their own boats.   All students will   be under the supervision of our race coach in class and at specific local regattas.   Last summer we supported and coached our sailors in 7 local day-long Opti regattas and expect to support about the same number of events this year.   Regatta fees are not included.

     
  • Simply Sailing:  Hartley & 420  (ages 11-16)

    Monday – Friday, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm           $285/week

    Let's go Sailing....Grab a partner or sail solo in this exciting class designed to get kids on the water as quickly as possible.    This class is the perfect opportunity for students who know how to sail, who want to get out there, to simply go sailing.   Students are introduced to more advanced sailing techniques, basic navigation and will work on improving their overall comfort with sailing around Stonington Harbor and Fishers Island Sound. 420's and the new Hartley 12 will be the choice of boats for this class.
     
  • 420 Racing Program Session 1 & Session 2 (ages 12-17)

    Pre-requisites: Opti Racing, Opti Green Fleet, and/or Instructor recommendation; minimum sailor weight 90 pounds, minimum 200 pounds total crew
    Intermediate Level - Come learn what it takes to be successful in fleet and team racing (the fun and challenging form of sailing as a team sport). Our experienced race coaches will challenge students to perfect their boat handling techniques, with the skipper and crew developing and refining coordination and mutual reliance. Students will work on improving and refining their boat-handling skills and developing together as a two-person team.   Students will be challenged to perfect their upwind and downwind sailing techniques and will learn to better use hiking straps, tiller extensions, and sail controls and will develop their spinnaker and trapeze skills.   Students will expand their knowledge of wind, weather, and tides, and will work on basic racing techniques and rules. Students will be encouraged to compete in the many local 420 regattas that we tow boats to by water.   All students will be under the supervision of our race coaches in class and at local regattas.   In addition to fleet racing, coaches will teach the techniques, tactics and rules of team racing through practice drills and a practice-race format.   The top students from this class will represent NESS in the ECSA All-Star Regatta, a college sailing formatted event hosted each year at the Coast Guard Academy in their fleets of Collegiate 420’s and FJ’s.   This class will also participate in the popular and fun ECSA team racing series.     All students will be under the supervision of our experienced race coaches in class and at both fleet and team racing regattas.
     
  • Junior Windsurfing (ages 8-12)

    Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm        $285/week

    June 22-26; June 29-July 3; July 6-10; July 13-17; July 20-24; July 27-31; Aug 3-7; Aug 10-14; Aug 17-21

    Pre-requisites: none, but must enjoy swimming

    Beginner Level - This program is designed to teach the basics of windsurfing including, proper stance, self-rescue, tacking and gybing as well as some basic sail theory.   Looking for something a bit different and challenging, windsurfing, is a sport that teaches balance and strength.   Taught on our Bic Techno 290 boards we have a sail to fit your size.
     
  • Animal Predators (Ages 6–9)

    June 29 - July 3, Aug 17 - 21, 9:00 am - Noon  $190/week

    Includes: kayaking, trap building and snorkel adventures

    Living in the ocean can be pretty hard at times. There are no supermarkets, so how do the fish get their food? Imagine being able to catch and shell a crab with no arms, being able to take your stomach out of your mouth, or moving your arms as fast as a bullet, or being able to change color so quickly that almost nothing can detect you.  Learn about and be amazed by the techniques and features of all kinds of well adapted ocean predators!
     
  • Wild Survival (Ages 10-13)

    July 6 - 10, Mon-Fri 1:00 - 4:00 pm       $190/week

    Includes:  kayaking, and snorkel adventures

    Do you think you could survive if you were alone in the wilderness? Come and learn survival techniques such as navigation, using a map and compass, build a shelter from what you find, capture your own food using fish traps, cast nets and seine nets and learn to track some of the local native species. Explore by foot, through kayaking and snorkeling.
