    Aquarium Husbandry (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Dive into the role of an animal husbandry specialist as you build your own aquarium habitat! Decide as a team for what sediment, algae, and animals will reside in your tank.  Take ownership as you learn to care for your animals and use water chemistry tests to make sure your aquarium is a healthy ecosystem.  Analyze animal behavior, look into animal training techniques, and experiment with training approaches.  Includes:  aquarium care, boat trips, & snorkel adventures

    Get a taste of sailing, kayaking, surfing, stand up paddle boarding, and a windsurfing simulation in this adventure program.  Build your muscles with a taste of kayaking, feel the gentle rock and roll of a sailboat while tied to the dock, practice your balance using surfboards and learn the technique of pulling up a windsurf sail.


  • Week 3 (July 10-14)

    Ocean Tech (AM Session, 9 am - 12 pm)

    Use underwater cameras, remote operated vehicles (ROVs), Go Pros, and microscopes to accomplish a series of tech challenges.  Create a ROV to perform a task, use the NESS bait cam and underwater cameras to see what is lurking below, and take closer looks at a variety of natural objects using microscopes.  Use your technological findings to assist in potential increases in fishing productivity while getting a taste of fishing.  Includes: ROVs, fishing, microscopes, boat trips, & snorkel adventures


  • Play-Yak = GAME ON! (Ages 9-12)

    Includes: kayaking & games    $220/week

    That’s right – you read correctly. This week is all about games and having FUN on the water. Kayak your way through the harbor and play games like capture the flag, sponge tag, kayak soccer, knockout, and create your own scavenger hunt. Test your paddle technique, balance and coordination in this week of getting out on the water and playing with your friends.

  • Flats Fishing (Ages 11-17)

    Includes: fly fishing, spin fishing, boat rides & kayaking    $260/week

    Come join NESS to learn about the fantastic sport of flats fishing. Saltwater flats fishing is used to target a variety of species available depending on the season. Striped bass and bluefish are local all summer, with the occasional transient like banded rudder fish and jack crevalle. Learn saltwater specific fishing techniques to fish your local waters. Gain experience in casting, tackle and lure selection, rigging, fish fighting and proper release techniques. This activity demands specific techniques so enrollment is limited.

    Students should bring their own fishing rods and tackle ready for use.  Some NESS rods are available and bait will be provided, please call to inquire.

  • STEAM Adventures (Ages 6–10)

    August 14-18, 8:30 am-12:30 pm  $210/week

    Use science, technology, engineering, art, and math to undertake these exciting STEAM adventures.  Learn about the field of Biomimicry as you develop a product based on nature to design and market to the NESS judges, investigate the power of currents and wind using experiments and iPads, look into green technologies related to wave and wind power.

    Includes: boogie boarding, microscopes, snorkel adventures, playing in the salt pond and the ocean.

  • Biology of Reptiles & Birds (8-12)

    Wednesdays, March 8, 15 & 22

    9:00 am-12:00 pm

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $120

    Investigate the physiology of reptiles and birds.  Perform experiments related to body warmth and cooling techniques, compare and contrast phyla, explore dinosaurs to look for extinct relatives, and use microscopes to see views of bird and reptile items.  Investigate bird flight and use biomimicry to design your own flying contraption based on birds.  Link in some bird data collection using citizen science.

    Pre-requisites: Opti Advanced and/or Instructor recommendation

    Intermediate Level - Students will be challenged to perfect their sailing techniques, learn to use hiking straps and tiller extensions, and expand their knowledge of wind, weather and upwind sailing.   Students will be introduced to basic racing techniques and will be encouraged to participate in local Green Fleet regattas, which are designed for new racers.   All students will be under the supervision of our instructors and coaches in class and at specific local regattas.   Be on the lookout for your ECSA regatta booklet which has all the regatta information in it that will be handed out during the first week of programs. Typically your child will participate in 6-8 regattas over the 8 week summer.   Regatta fees are not included and typically range from $25-$35 per event.
