    Winter & Spring (March, April, May)

    Seal Watch: Grab your friends and family for this exciting adventure! Explore the various types of marine mammals as you embark on our local Fishers Island Sound. Discuss the unique adaptations these large creatures have to hunt food, migrate thousands of miles and how they brave the cold!

    Lighthouse Cruise: Climb aboard and discover the challenges of navigating the waters of Fishers Island Sound while exploring some of the local lighthouses and landmarks that act as beacons welcoming ships safely into Long Island Sound.

    Details: All ages (children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult)


    All trips are weather dependent
    Enrollment is limited to 6 persons (min 3)
    $35/person; $15 kids 8 years and under

  • Week 2 June 29 - July 3

    Edible Ocean  (AM Session,  9 am - 12 pm)

    Includes: underwater video technology, kayaking, and snorkeling

    Unravel the delicious and edible interconnections between humans, animals, and the ocean. Uncover the importance of algae, engineer new traps, lures, and devices, clam, and develop your own technique to harvest food from the ocean. View images from an underwater video camera to watch your device in action.          $215
     
  • Creature Creation (Grades 1-4)

    Thursdays 4:00-5:30        November 5, 12 & 19

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $60

    Create a new creature that can survive in a specific environment. Watch a portion of Blue Planet, Planet Earth, or venture outside to gather information about the ecosystem in which your creature will be dwelling. Present your new creature and its special adaptations to a panel of scientists for classification of your organism in the NESS Creature Files.     

     
  • Fish (All Ages)

    Wednesday, March 30, 10:00 am-12:00 pm

    Enrollment: minimum 6 students

    Cost: $20

    Discover the amazing world of bony, cartilaginous, and jawless fish.  Analyze fish fins and tails, look at live and preserved specimens, watch for specialized fish behaviors within the NESS aquariums, and design your own fish.

     
  • Wild Senses (ages 4-6)

    Wednesdays 12:00-1:30pm     April 8, 15, 22 & 29

    Enrollment: Minimum 6 students 
    Cost: $80

    Animals have special senses for sight, touch, hearing, hunting, and hiding. Experiment with your sense capabilities and compare findings to animals found locally and around the world. Mimic some of the abilities of animals including owls, dolphins, fish, and more.  To register call NESS at 860-535-9362. 
     
  • Week 10 (August 22-26)

    Apex Animals (PM Session, 1 pm - 4 pm)

    Animals within a food chain have some ultimate adaptations for hunting and survival.  Learn about apex predators like orcas, sharks, giant squid, and osprey and find out some incredible strategies the prey of these predators utilize to avoid detection.  Analyze the animals in the NESS touch tanks for interesting behaviors and dissect a shark. 
    Includes: dissection, 1 boat trip, & snorkeling

    Come to the NESStival to learn what NESS has to offer homeschool students and families throughout the year.  This open house is free and a way to be introduced to the teaching philosophy, project based learning, and adventure education that NESS offers to homeschool students of all ages.  Touch live ocean animals, peer down microscopes at teeny tiny critters, simulate sailing, sit in a kayak, and speak with NESS educators about upcoming programs.
