New London Summer Splash!

Last week, NESS hosted a grant-funded AccelerateCT Summer Camp program for New London students called Summer Splash!

28 students ages 6-10 had the opportunity to spend a week at NESS, participating in as many activities as possible in sailing, adventure sports, and marine science! Students could choose their own adventure each day, pairing the best activity with the best conditions. Adventures could include riding the waves on a boogie board, exploring new techniques while independently sailing Optis, snorkeling to discover underwater life, team building and communication skills on NESS’s small keelboats, and reeling in local species with fishing rods. The free program included a daily bus ride from New London to NESS Stonington, lunch, and the students’ own PFD (Personal Flotation Device) to keep!

During one of our morning ice breakers, we asked our students what the highlight of their summer had been so far, and a couple students said their favorite part of summer was this week at NESS! One even said it was their favorite experience from the past TWO summers!

"She is having a blast! She is coming home every day and talking about it in depth and how much she wants to do it next year. It has also been a really nice primer for her going back to school and having social interaction with more than one or two kids. Thank you so much for everyone's efforts, and your program!"
