  • Fishtopia (grades K - 4): Tuesday, November 3; 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Try your luck at fishing, scheme new ways to capture fish, and learn about local and global fisheries that catch the seafood we eat. Simulate different fishing approaches through fun and engaging activities. Learn about aquaculture and propose and design your own idea to the NESS Fishery Judges. Remember to dress warmly as we will be outside!
  • Geocaching (grades 5-8): Tuesday, November 3; 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Learn basic navigation to participate in the fun hobby of Geocaching! Geocaching is a real life treasure hunt using a device that has GPS! Join a NESS scientist as we learn about navigation on land and sea, make an item to let other geocachers know we’ve discovered a particular treasure, and go geocaching! Remember to dress warmly as we will be outside!
  • Amazing Autotrophs (grades K - 4): Tuesday, November 3; 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Take a peek inside the world of autotrophs (plants and organisms that make their own food). Discover how autotrophs grow without eating, eat without mouths, and move without feet. Create a herbarium, explore wild bacteria that call hydrothermal vents home and investigate the many human uses of these amazing organisms!
  • Fishing 101 (grades 5-8): Tuesday, November 3; 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Learn the basics of fishing and crabbing. Get familiar with a rod & reel, knots, lure selection, and some local fish species. (Weather permitting, we’ll go outside to see what we can catch from our docks.) Use an underwater viewing camera for a closer look at what may be about to bite.

Veterans Day:

All programs must have a minimum of 6 students registered to run and are $40/student. Programs are also available for Westerly Schools and Pine Point School vacation days.

  • Puff Car Competition (grades K-4): Wednesday, November 11; 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Build and race your own alternative energy vehicle that is powered by you! Compare and graph how your vehicle does compared to other students and finally race your vehicle in the first ever Puff Car Grand Prix!
  • Micro Meteorologists (ages 4 - 6): Weather is an amazing and sometimes mysterious thing.
  • Habitat Hunt (ages 4-6): Venture to a variety of animal habitats in our local area.
  • Marine Camouflage Art (grades 5-8): Wednesday, November 11; 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. Jump into the artistic world of ocean camouflage! Use paint, clay, pastels, and many other mediums to bring the underwater world to life. Pick your sea creature, your art materials, and have fun while discovering the animal champions of camouflage lie seahorses, octopus, and flounder.
  • Ecosystem Treasure Hunt (grades K-4): Wednesday, November 11; 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Follow maps and clues to reach different ecosystems and find the natural treasures within the environment. Use compasses, microscopes, and animal evidence to decipher the hints to reveal and find your destinations. Remember to dress warmly as we will be outside!
  • Sea Survival Life Vest Challenge (grades 5-8): Wednesday, November 11; 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Learn how engineers work to solve the challenges of a society and prove your sea safety skills by improving on a simple sea safety item, a life vest! Students work in teams to devise a personal floatation device or "PFD" using everyday materials that can keep an unopened can of soup or vegetables afloat. Finally see how well your team would survive in a hypothetical sea accident.
