I Feel Like the King of the World!!!

February 17, 2015

This story is about Johnny*.  Johnny is a special kid with glasses, a big smile, a look of wonder on his face, and a love for learning and experiencing new things.  He wasn’t always this way though.

At the beginning of our program Johnny was a much more timid kid, especially around the water. He was afraid of picking up new creatures on our kayaking adventures and did not want to get wet.  Throughout the course of our kayak adventures, I slowly got him more and more out of his comfort zone.  I showed him that it isn’t scary to hold the various crabs, snails, and other creatures.  However, this isn’t the climax of the story for me.  After kayaking ended this fall, the kids were taught how to sail and were given the opportunity to be the captain of a larger sailboat with four other kids and two instructors.  I was on the sailboat with Johnny his first time being a captain of the sailboat.  The pure happiness, confidence, and euphoria I was able to witness was the most rewarding moment of my life.  Not only did he light up with the biggest smile on his face, he also repeated the exclamation, “I feel like the king of the world!!!”  In that moment, I could see that I had just witnessed a moment that completely changed a kid’s life.

After that day of sailing, Johnny became the kid I described previously:  a special kid with glasses, a big smile, a look of wonder on his face, and a love for learning and experiencing new things.  I truly believe if it were not for our program he wouldn’t have been able to have that experience and I feel privileged to have been a witness.

*Johnny is not his real name.
