March 9-13th is AmeriCorps Week!

This is a week designed to bring awareness to AmeriCorps Programs and to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the AmeriCorps Members who commit to a year of service in order to help communities that need it most! Each year, more than 75,000 men and women engage in intensive service focusing on disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures and supporting veterans and military families.


Did you know?

  • More than 800,000 people have served as AmeriCorps members since 1994
  • More than 1 billion hours have been served by AmeriCorps members since 1994
  • There are over 15,000 AmeriCorps Service Locations across the country

Since the beginning of the school year, NESS SEA AmeriCorps members have:

  • Provided over 700 hours of mentoring, tutoring and classroom support to Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School (BDJMS) students
  • Provided more than 80 engaging, hands-on afterschool programs at our classroom at BDJMS, our field site at Ocean Beach park and our Stonington location
  • Served over 130 BDJMS students
  • Participated in numerous school based activities such as school dances, Holiday Craft Night, Baskets for Families Drive, Open Houses and many more

About the NESS SEA AmeriCorps Program: Founded in 2014, the NESS (New England Science & Sailing) SEA (STEM Education Ambassadors) AmeriCorps program uses national service to engage students of New London in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) based ocean adventure learning that builds life skills, self-esteem and citizenship.
